David 'Fathead' Newman

David 'Fathead' Newman (1933-2009) was a tenor saxophonist and flutist from Corsicana, Texas who grew up in Dallas and spent his career working across jazz, soul, and rhythm and blues. He played with Ray Charles for more than a decade starting in 1954, appearing on some of the most celebrated recordings of that era, and later recorded and performed alongside figures like Aretha Franklin, Herbie Mann, and B.B. King. He was a leading voice in the Texas Tenor style, a big-toned, bluesy approach to the saxophone rooted in the sound of the American South.
