Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer born in 1917 and raised in Yonkers, New York. She got her start after winning an amateur contest at the Apollo Theater in 1934 and went on to spend decades as one of the most celebrated vocalists in jazz history, admired for her purity of tone, wide range, and precise intonation. She won multiple Grammy Awards and recorded extensively for labels including Decca and Verve.
