Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021) was a New York-born composer and lyricist who spent his career writing for Broadway musical theater. Mentored by Oscar Hammerstein II, he went on to write both music and lyrics for a long string of original musicals, winning eight Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and an Academy Award along the way. His work pushed the form in directions it had not gone before, tackling darker and more complex subjects than the Broadway mainstream.
