Songscription launches to build "The Shazam for Sheet Music"

How a few nerds with a passion for music and technology are revolutionizing how music is played, learned, and shared.

Every day, musicians of all levels face a common frustration: hearing a song they love, but not finding the right sheet music to play it.

Our research with hundreds of musicians revealed the magnitude of this challenge: turning songs into accurate, readable sheet music is incredibly time-consuming and complex, often distracting artists from their creative flow. Composers and producers struggle to recreate an improvisation they heard or liked from a jam session, because they don't recall the exact notes. People learning music cannot find up to 60% of the songs they want to play, and educators spend hours every week searching for sheet music for their students, oftentimes needing to transcribe by hand themselves.

What if there were a Shazam for sheet music?

Thus, Songscription was born. Our team first met as students with a shared love of music and a nerdy obsession with technology. As musicians who felt this problem firsthand, we set out to harness AI to make creating, playing, and learning music more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Today, we are thrilled to announce that Songscription has successfully closed an initial investment from Reach Capital and has been accepted into StartX's Summer Cohort, marking two significant milestones in our journey to revolutionize music transcription, composition and education. With this support, we will expand our technology platform to better serve musicians, educators, and creators worldwide.

Our Technology

We are solving a problem that has challenged the field of music information retrieval for decades: converting audio files into clear, editable MIDI and sheet music. Our proprietary Transformer-based model architecture combines cutting-edge research from sequence learning and music AI and is trained on high-quality data sourced from professional artists. Our model understands nuanced ornament details like trills, ties, and mordents, which have enabled us to achieve industry-leading transcription accuracy.

Users can upload any of their songs, and get transcriptions for piano, violin, flute, and guitar, with additional instruments coming soon. They can download and edit their transcriptions directly within our platform. And since not all users read traditional notation, we've also introduced a piano roll feature to make learning how to play accessible for everyone.

Today, Songscription has generated over 20,000 transcriptions for more than 3,000 users across 150 countries, with our user base growing 60% every month. We've also proudly closed our first contract with a music company for our audio to MIDI model, which they say is the best out there.

What's Next: Our Roadmap

Going forward, we're excited to continue improving our AI models, supporting additional instruments, enabling stem-splitting and multi-track uploads, and introducing new features such as musical arrangements and music leveling.

Our Mission and Vision

We are committed to our mission: to empower musicians worldwide to learn and play the songs they love. We imagine a world where songwriters can focus less on writing notes and more on creating and sharing music, where educators can access arrangements created for their students and ensembles. We hope to inspire the millions of people who know how to play music to pick up their instrument and practice more often with resources tailored to their level.

Music is a core part of what makes us human. Our dream is for Songscription to turn what currently jams up musicians into opportunities for them to jam out. If you share our vision for the future of music creation and education, we'd love to hear from you!

With gratitude and excitement,

The Songscription Team
