How to Turn Your Recordings into Piano Sheet Music with AI

AI transcription has made it practical to turn your own recordings — solo piano takes, digital piano MIDI captures, full-band tracks — into piano sheet music in a single pass. Here's how the workflow actually goes.

Turning your own recording into piano sheet music used to be a project. You'd open a notation editor, loop the recording in short chunks, type notes in by hand, fix the rhythm, then do it all again for the next eight bars. AI transcription has compressed most of that into a few minutes of audio processing and a cleanup pass. The workflow still rewards musicians who pick the right source and know what to fix in the output.

What follows is a walkthrough for the cases most working musicians actually hit: a solo piano recording you played into a phone, a digital piano take captured straight to MIDI, a full-band track of one of your own songs. Each one becomes piano sheet music through roughly the same pipeline, with different things to watch for along the way.

What Counts as "Your Own Recording"

Before tool choice matters, source choice does. "Your own recording" is a broad category, and the cleaner the source, the less work you do at the end. A few common starting points:

  • A solo piano recording. You played the piece into a phone, a USB mic, or a digital piano. This is the easiest case for piano transcription because the instrument and the target instrument are the same.
  • A digital piano take captured to MIDI. Cleaner than any audio recording, since you skip the audio-to-MIDI step entirely. The remaining work is the MIDI-to-notation pass.
  • A full-band recording of one of your songs. A piano part might already exist in the mix, or you might want a piano reduction of the whole song. These are different jobs, and they take different paths through the workflow.

Why Piano Is a Harder Target Than Most

Piano transcription is harder than most single-line instruments because piano is densely polyphonic. A model transcribing a single guitar lead only has to figure out one pitch at a time. Step 4: Review against the recording

Play the original audio against the transcription. This catches more errors faster than reading the score on its own. Listen for missed notes, extra notes, wrong octaves on bass notes, and rhythm errors where a held note got cut short. Step 5: Export and (optionally) refine in a notation editor

Source Types and How to Handle Each

Solo piano recordings

The easiest case, and the one where AI transcription produces the cleanest results. A piano-specific model fed a piano-only recording usually produces output that's recognizable as the performance on the first pass. Cleanup is mostly about fixing edge cases: a fast run where the model missed a note, a sustained chord where it ended a voice early, the occasional octave error on low bass notes. Plan on 10–20 minutes of editing for a three- or four-minute piece.

Full-band recordings of your own songs

The full mix is the hardest input, and the workflow that helps most is stem separation before transcription. Run the song through a stem splitter (Moises, LALAL.AI, or similar), then transcribe the piano stem on its own. If the song doesn't have a piano part to start with — say it's guitar-driven — you'll do better building a piano arrangement than trying to transcribe a piano that isn't there. In that case, the melody and chord chart matter more than the original arrangement. That means the cleanup is about engraving decisions (hand splits, voicing, rhythmic notation) rather than fixing transcription errors. When the AI Output Isn't Enough

Even the strongest current piano transcription models will miss things. The errors cluster in a few predictable places:

  • Low bass notes. Pitches below the staff are harder for any model to identify; expect to check the lowest octave by ear.
  • Pedal-heavy passages. When the sustain pedal blurs notes together, the model may either miss new attacks or hold notes too long. The fix is usually a few targeted edits in the piano roll.
  • Soft inner voices. A held inner-voice line that's quieter than the melody and bass can get masked. If you know it's there, add it manually.

None of these are deal-breakers. They're the places to spend your editing time. A musician who knows the recording can fix these issues in minutes; a tool starting from a blank page can't.

Final Thoughts

The shift AI transcription has made for your own recordings is mostly a shift in what the slow part is. Five years ago, the slow part was getting notes onto the page. Now the slow part is the editorial work that follows: choosing what to keep, what to simplify, how to voice a chord differently for clarity, where to add fingering. Those decisions are yours, and they're the part of music notation that benefits from a musician's judgment rather than a model's.

The practical takeaway: don't let the "I don't want to type all those notes in by hand" problem stop you from putting your music on the page.
