How can I transpose sheet music online for free?
Upload a MusicXML file to Songscription: the upload is free, and so is shifting the score to any key and hearing the result. Recordings convert with the standard free tier, where clips up to 30 seconds transcribe free and a free trial covers full songs.
Can I transpose a MusicXML or MIDI file?
Yes, directly. Upload the .musicxml, .mxl, or .mid file and the score opens in the browser ready to shift to any key. Files exported from MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, or any DAW all work, and the transposed result exports right back to those programs.
Can I transpose a PDF of sheet music?
No. Songscription cannot read PDFs, photos, or scanned scores. If a recording of the piece exists, transcribe the recording and transpose the resulting score. If the PDF came from notation software, export MusicXML from that program and upload it instead.
Can AI transpose a song to fit my voice?
Yes. Transcribe the song, or upload its MusicXML or MIDI, then shift the score until the highest note sits where you can sing it. Moving a couple of semitones at a time and testing with playback gets most singers to the right key in a minute or two.
How do I transpose a song to a different key?
Bring the music in either form: a MusicXML or MIDI file uploads and transposes directly, and a recording transcribes into a score first. Either way, you pick the new key and the whole piece moves, with the key signature and every accidental rewritten properly.
- Add the music. Upload a .musicxml, .mxl, or .mid file, or add a recording: an mp3, a YouTube link, or your own playing.
- Pick the new key. Open the score and shift it up or down to any key. Playback lets you hear the new key before you commit to it.
- Print or export. Download the transposed score as a PDF for the stand, or as MusicXML or MIDI to keep working elsewhere.
Transpose a MusicXML or MIDI file
This is the direct path, and for MusicXML it costs nothing: score uploads are free. Drop the file in, the notation renders in the browser, and one control moves it to the key you need. When it sounds right, export PDF, MusicXML, or MIDI.
It works on files from anywhere: MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, or Dorico exports, a MIDI from a keyboard or a download, or a score a friend sent. Not sure which of the two formats you're holding? Have a PDF instead?
Songscription cannot read PDFs, photos, or paper sheet music, so a PDF cannot be transposed here. If a recording of the piece exists, transcribe that instead: the AI writes a fresh score from the audio, and that score transposes freely. If your PDF came out of notation software, export MusicXML from the same program and upload that.
Transposing for your instrument
Most transposing questions are really instrument questions: the clarinet part has to sit a major second above concert pitch, the alto sax a major sixth, and a singer just needs the song where their voice lives. Transposing for students
