Features
No Transposing Needed
The concert flute is a C instrument, so the notes on the page are the pitches you hear. There is no key shift to work out before you play.
Flute Separated From the Mix
Select Flute and the model picks out the flute line from a full recording, leaving the rhythm section and vocals out of the part.
Simple to Clean Up
Open the part in the editor to fix a pitch, move a note, or adjust a rhythm where a breath broke the line, then export.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn a song into flute sheet music?
Yes. Upload the song with Flute selected and Songscription writes the flute line as a treble clef part. If the song has no flute, the lead sheet output fits better, since it writes the main melody with chord symbols above it.
What range does the flute cover?
A standard concert flute plays from middle C, or the B below it on flutes with a B foot, up to around the C three octaves higher. A transcribed note well below that range usually means another instrument was picked up, so check those first.
Does it work on a flute solo with piano accompaniment?
Yes. In single instrument mode the model isolates the flute from the rest of the recording and ignores the piano, so the part you get back is just the flute line.
Can I play the flute part back slowly?
Yes. Playback has speed control, and the piano roll shows the notes falling in time, which helps when you are learning a fast passage by ear and eye together.
Can I transcribe flute for free?
Yes. You can transcribe unlimited 30-second clips for free, with a free trial for longer ones. Paid plans give you more transcription time and support for longer files.
How do I convert a flute recording to sheet music?
Add the recording, keep Flute selected, and Songscription writes the flute line on a treble staff at sounding pitch. From there you can slow it down, correct it, and export it.
- Upload or paste a link. MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC and M4A files work, as do videos and YouTube, TikTok or Instagram links.
- Flute is preselected. The model isolates the flute and leaves the other instruments out.
- Practice from it. Loop the part at a slower speed, fix anything you hear differently, and download a PDF or MusicXML.
How do the flute's registers show up on the page?
The flute sounds as written and reads treble clef, and each of its three registers sits in a different part of the staff. Knowing where a passage lives tells you what to listen for when you review it.
| Register | Approximate range | Where it sits on the staff | Review tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low (first octave) | C4 to C5 | From a ledger line below the staff up to the third space | Soft low notes can be quiet in a mix; make sure none were dropped |
| Middle (second octave) | C5 to C6 | From the third space up to two ledger lines above | Most melodies live here; octave errors are the main thing to catch |
| High (third octave) | C6 to C7 | Several ledger lines above the staff | Bright, piercing notes; confirm the octave and any fast runs |
What should flutists check after transcribing?
Review the spots where flute technique blurs the line between one note and the next.
For more on taking a tune into flute territory, see our guide to arranging a song for flute.
- Octave slips between the first and second registers, since overblown notes share fingerings
- Trills and grace notes, which may arrive as clusters of short notes
- Slurred runs, where the rhythm of fast notes can need straightening
- Breath breaks, which can cut one long note into two
- Flutter tonguing and breathy effects, which do not map neatly onto notes
What can I transcribe for flute?
Anything with an audible flute line: a jazz flute solo, a folk tune, a film theme, or your own practice take. Students compare what they played against a teacher's recording, and teachers write out a passage a pupil heard and wants to learn.
If the song has no flute and you just want the tune for your instrument, try the lead sheet generator. It writes the main melody with chord symbols above it, and you can transpose it if the tune sits too low for the flute.
Is flute transcription in beta, and can I get the whole band too?
Flute is a beta instrument, marked with a Beta badge in the picker. Single instrument mode isolates the flute from the full mix and ignores the rest, which keeps the part uncluttered.
For a recording where you want everything, Multi-Instrument (beta) writes a separate part for each instrument in one pass, flute, piccolo and clarinet included, as a multi staff score and multitrack MIDI. When the flute is the only part you need, single instrument mode on this page is still the cleanest route.
