Built Around Tenor Sax
The saxophone setting is a tenor sax model, the horn heard on countless jazz, soul and rock records. A clear tenor line is where it does its best work.
Solos Pulled From the Band
Choose the saxophone and the model follows the horn through the full mix, so a solo over drums, bass and piano comes back as just the sax line.
Transpose for the Player
A recording carries sounding pitch. Transpose in the editor to suit the reader, or export MusicXML and set the instrument in your notation program.

Can I transcribe a sax solo from a recording?
Yes. Upload the track or paste a link, keep the saxophone selected, and Songscription isolates the horn from the full mix and writes the line as sheet music. Sax is in beta, so check fast runs and bent notes against the recording before you rely on the part.
Will the part be in the right key for my tenor sax?
Check before you read it. A recording only carries the pitches that sound, and a B-flat tenor reads a major ninth above those. The editor transposes up to 12 semitones either way; for the full ninth, export MusicXML and assign tenor sax in your notation program, which writes the transposed part for you.
Does it work for alto or soprano sax?
The model is built for tenor, so tenor is its strongest case. Alto and soprano lines can still come through usefully because the model follows the pitches it hears, but expect more to check, especially near the top of the horn.
Can I get the chords behind the solo too?
Not from the sax part, which is a single line. For the changes, run the same song through the lead sheet output, which writes the melody with chord symbols above it, or use Multi-Instrument (beta) to get the bass, keys and guitar parts alongside the sax from the same recording.
Can I try sax transcription for free?
Yes. You can transcribe unlimited 30-second clips for free, with a free trial for longer ones. Paid plans give you more transcription time and support for longer files.
How do I turn a sax recording into sheet music?
Upload it with the saxophone selected and Songscription writes the tenor sax line as notation you can play back, correct and export. It works from a full band mix, so you do not need the horn on its own.
- Pick the recording. A record, a live video, a YouTube link, or your own playing captured in the browser.
- Leave Tenor Sax selected. The model isolates the saxophone and ignores the rhythm section.
- Transpose and export. Shift the part for the reader if needed, then download PDF, MIDI or MusicXML.
How does saxophone transposition work?
Saxophones are transposing instruments: the written note and the sounding note differ by a fixed interval. That is standard music theory, and it decides how far you shift a transcribed line before a sax player reads it.
The transpose control moves the whole score up to 12 semitones either way, which covers soprano and alto. For tenor and baritone, export MusicXML and set the instrument in your notation program, or follow our guide to transposing a song for alto or tenor sax.
| Saxophone | Key | A written note sounds | To write a part from concert pitch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soprano | B-flat | A major second lower | Raise it a major second (2 semitones) |
| Alto | E-flat | A major sixth lower | Raise it a major sixth (9 semitones) |
| Tenor | B-flat | A major ninth lower | Raise it a major ninth (14 semitones) |
| Baritone | E-flat | An octave and a major sixth lower | Raise it an octave and a major sixth (21 semitones) |
What should a saxophonist check in the transcription?
The sax plays one note at a time, which suits automatic transcription, but its expressive habits are where a second listen pays off.
Our post on turning a saxophone melody into sheet music covers each of these with listening tips.
- Scoops and falls, which may show up as extra short notes around the target pitch
- Growls and subtone, where the sound is rough or breathy
- Altissimo notes above the normal range, worth confirming by ear
- Swung eighth notes, which can come out as dotted or tied rhythms you may prefer to write straight with a swing marking
- Fast bebop runs, where a passing note can drop out
Which recordings work best for sax transcription?
A horn that sits on top of the mix gives the cleanest part: a featured solo, a ballad melody, or a hook no other horn doubles. Unison horn sections and heavy reverb make it harder to separate the tenor from its neighbors.
Once the part is done, audio to MusicXML explains how the export moves into notation software, which is also where the tenor transposition is easiest to finish.
Is saxophone transcription in beta?
Yes. Tenor Sax carries a Beta badge in the instrument picker, as do all instruments apart from piano. Single instrument mode isolates the sax from the full mix and leaves the rest out.
When the goal is the whole band rather than the horn, Multi-Instrument (beta) writes a separate part for every instrument in one pass, with soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax each recognized. For a solo or a horn line you want as clean as possible, single instrument mode on this page is still the best route.
