What Each Key Count Actually Costs
A 61-key keyboard normally runs from C2 to C7. What sits outside that is worth knowing specifically rather than in the abstract.
The bottom octave
Below C2 you have A0 up to B1, and that region is used for weight rather than melody: octave doublings in the left hand, the low root of a big chord, the rumble under a film cue. Losing it makes an arrangement sound thinner rather than wrong, and in a lot of pop material it is never asked for at all. The top octave

Unweighted keys spring back instantly with no resistance, like an organ. They teach a poking motion that does not transfer to a real piano, and because they are usually not touch sensitive, everything comes out at one volume no matter how you play it. Semi-weighted adds resistance and is a real improvement. Touch sensitivity is the part not to compromise on.
